Too much iron in the body is dangerous because it can lead to problems such as liver damage and increase your risk of heart disease. Donating blood regularly can aid in the reduction of your iron levels.
Lowering iron levels through blood donation is particularly beneficial to men. Women are predisposed to having low iron levels and possibly due to monthly menstruation cycles.
When donating blood, your iron levels are checked to determine if they are high enough to reduce – along with your blood pressure, hemoglobin and weight.
Getting a regular iron level check up is a good indicator of your heart health.
January is national blood donor month. Normally blood donations are in shorter supply and higher demand during the winter months due to illness, traveling and inclement weather.
