You’ve heard that “laughter is the best medicine”... but what makes it actually good for your health?
An American Heart Association article titled Top 10 Tips to Refresh Yourself says that, “Medical studies show that laughter boosts levels of endorphins, the body’s “feel-good” hormones. Laughter may even boost the immune system. A good attitude and exercising your sense of humor may reduce stress, lower depression and help your body and mind to heal.”
A significant result of laughter is stress reduction. When stress is reduced, muscles are relaxed, blood pressure is lowered, mood is elevated, and the immune system is strengthened. Blood flow is increased during laughter, and therefore improves the delivery of oxygen to organ tissue. All of these elements help to avoid a heart attack, stroke, ulcer and other problems that are commonly associated with stress.
However, it is not just the act of laughing that is a basis of the health benefit – it is also the general light-heartedness and positive attitude that comes along with having a sense of humor. So, stop worrying so much! Get your “to do” list done, exercise, eat right and make time for some laughs! Here are some examples of what you can do to get plenty of laughs in: watch a funny movie, read a humorous book, flip through your photo albums, re-connect with old friends and share your life stories, go out for a night on the town, or share jokes with your co-workers or family. Also, if you are able to care for a pet, they can be a great source of entertainment to keep you laughing for many years.
And don’t forget to spread the laughter, it is contagious and it’s healthy!
